Girl Critically Injured in Carnival Ride

On Saturday afternoon, May 7, a girl fell from a carnival ride at the Cinco de Mayo Festival.

The accident happened just after 1.30 p.m. at South 25th and O streets when Elizabeth Gilreath was on a ride called King’s Crown. She fell off the seat and her long red hair that became tangled in the spinning instrument of the ride. Other children in her compartment began screaming for help and the ride was stopped and the operator ran to get help.

Elizabeth, aged 11 reportedly suffered a fractured skull as her hair was ripped out and there is a chance she will not be able to see again. She was taken to hospital where she had several surgeries but is still critical.

A spokeswoman for the Nebraska Department of Labor, said that there was nothing to suggest that the ride wasn’t working properly on the day of the accident, or that the operator wasn’t paying attention.
