A man who killed a woman from Valparaiso in a crash was sentenced to 15 to 20 years in jail.
On March 29 this year, 63 year old Kathy Benes was driving to her job at the CenturyLink Center in downtown Omaha. Justin Ayers, aged 36, was traveling at about 100 mph in the eastbound lanes of Maple Street and hit Bene’s Chevrolet Impala in the rear pushing the vehicle over a raised median and into a a westbound pickup truck driven by Teresa Schulz. The impact broke Schulz’s leg and killed Benes.
Ayers’ blood-alcohol content was .156, more than twice the legal limit of .08. He had been working as an electrician in Omaha for eight years where he was struggling with alcohol addiction. He had already been in trouble in Florida for driving drunk.
Ayers was facing a maximum of 20 years in jail but was sentenced to 15 to 20 and under state law has to serve half before he is eligible for parole.
